The peeling wallpaper and rubber-lined drapes bear witness to the former resident of this home. An elderly man whose passion for all things wood remains evident in the beamed ceilings and modest furniture -- some of which he lovingly and proudly crafted by hand.
The soon to be replaced windows in this dining/sitting area look directly out on to the lake.
He spent a great deal of time in this room as each day Mother Nature choreographed awe inspiring vignettes right before his eyes. Sun, cloud and moonlight reflections dancing on the water; an assortment of boats, paddlers and water enthusiasts; the changing leaves as a backdrop to migratory birds in flight; the frozen lake covered in snow, all held his interest for over forty years.
He often shared with me his desire for change. A wish list of upgrades he wanted to make included the addition of a wood burning heat source in his favourite room. An otherwise welcoming room was made noticeably chillier in the evenings due to the large spanse of window and split-level design of the house. The latter was necessary, he'd explain, in order to respectfully co-exist with the huge rock formations that had been part of the land long before his arrival.
Sadly my father, an outwardly strong and healthy man, died at age 86 (July 2011) of an undetected cancer -- a mere forty-four days after receiving his life-altering diagnosis. My background in hospice, Reiki and palliative care enabled me to compassionately companion him to the end. During his final weeks much was shared including his hope that I'd preserve the integrity of the house he'd built. He met his death confident in the knowledge that I, his only offspring, would bring new life to his former home by carrying out many of the changes he had intended.
It is my belief that any one of the attractive and space-saving Fajardo Wood Burning Stoves will create a sense of intimacy as well as a feeling of physical and emotional warmth -- not only in this particular room but throughout the whole house. One flickering flame at a time the energy in this still much loved home by the lake will transition, heal and become alive again.
